Interior Design Bedroom: Mixing Practicality and Aesthetics

Even though a bedroom is usually meant for sleeping, people use it for all kinds of things during the day and at night.  Your bedroom is the room that generally contains your closet, so you use it for getting dressed.  Your bedroom might also double as a study area or a place to lounge while reading.  So this is a room that has many uses, and it’s also the place where you want to be most comfortable.  After all, you can’t fall asleep unless you’re completely relaxed.  So if you’re thinking about the interior design of your bedroom, keep the following things in mind:

  1. Warm vs. Cool Colours: Most people feel more active when surrounded by warm colours and light.  On the other hand, cool colours like blue and green make you feel more calm and relaxed and can help you fall asleep.  This is not a hard and fast rule.  If you’re the kind of person who can fall asleep no matter what, go ahead and paint that wall red.  But if you want to create a soothing atmosphere, go with something easier on the eyes, lighting that can be easily dimmed and artwork that you’d like to wake up to.  Sure, you might love that Picasso, but wouldn’t you find it a bit jarring to see those mixed-up body parts first thing in the morning?
  2. Closets: If you love clothes, remember to relegate enough space to your closet.  A walk-in closet is a great idea if you live in a large house.  However, if you have live in an apartment and have less space, you can still put together the kind of closet that will hold everything in an organized manner.  Space to hang longer items, fold smaller ones and drawers to hold lingerie are a must.  Plus, every woman needs to have a good shoe rack to display her Jimmy Choos!  A dressing table in your bedroom may seem a little old-fashioned, but you’ll appreciate it when you have a place to sit down and put on your jewelry and makeup.

  2. Books: If you keep your books and paperwork in the bedroom, consider slim bookshelves.  Often, people invest in bookshelves that take up a lot of space.  Most books aren’t more than ten inches in width, if that.  So consider lining your walls with slimmer bookshelves, and you’ll have enough space to create a small library without making the room look dingy.

These are just a few things to keep in mind while decorating your bedroom.  Overall, just remember that everything you bring into your life, whether it’s a book, a piece of clothing or a painting, should be something you’ll cherish.  So it’s a good idea to think twice before buying something that will just end up taking space.
