Interior Design

If you’re thinking about buying luxury property in London, you’ve probably also given some thought to the interior design of your home, whether it’s an apartment or a house.  Certain architectural elements will already be present no matter what you end up buying, but you can choose exactly how you want your interiors to look by paying attention to the little details.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when designing the interior of your home: 1. Space: One of the most important things you can do to make your living area comfortable is increase the amount of space that you have.  Your square footage may remain the same, but you can make it look more by using some tricks of the trade.  Painting your walls a light colour always gives the illusion of more space as does the judicious use of mirrors and glass.  Keeping your knick knacks down to a minimum and arranging them in one area also helps.  Carpets are great if you’re in a house but should be avoided in an apartment because they cut up the floor space, making it look like less than it is.

2. Artwork: Whether you have original artwork or you’re decorating with prints, you don’t want your artwork to completely blend into your room or stand out like a sore thumb.  You want people to be able to appreciate the art but also to be comfortable sitting down and just relaxing in its presence.  Large pieces of art are often relegated above the sofa or the bed while smaller pieces take up hallways, entrances etc.  However, keep in mind that this is not a hard and fast rule.  You can mix and match pieces with different styles, shapes and sizes and put them all on the same wall to create a lovely collage. 3. Wood: People often don’t pay that much attention to the type of wood they’re buying.  As long as it has the right colour polish so that it matches with other pieces of furniture, they’re satisfied.  However, wooden pieces can be lovingly crafted by hand so that they’re like pieces of art in themselves.  So whether you’re investing in a teak bookcase with filigree metal on the sides or cane chairs for your patio, try to think of yourself as a collector bringing together beautiful things that you will appreciate for years to come.
